Verse translations of selected plays by Aeschylus , Sophocles and Euripides by Léon Halévy. Volume I (1846) contains Prométhée Enchaîné, Electre (Sophocles), Les Phéniciennes and Hippolyte; volume II (1859) Ion, Oedipe à Colone, Ajax; volume III (1861) Les Euménides, Alceste and Iphigénie en Aulide. The translation of Sophocles' Electra was performed at the Théâtre de l'Odéon on the 18/12/1863, see Année littéraire et dramatique 6 (1865), p.195. Each play was introduced by a 'notice' giving the argument of the play and by a brief account of its popularity in ancient times. It was followed by a few 'Remarques' on major rewritings and imitations in French by prominent dramatists. Sources: BNF catalogue général, Bellanger Justin.
