Production notes:
Diogenes Laertius (7, 173) tells us that Sositheus attacked the Stoic Cleanthes in his play and he quotes the relevant line (this is the only fragment from this play which survives: TrGF1, 99 Sositheus, F4 p. 272). It is supposed that this play, if it existed, was a satyr drama. The date of this performance is not known. Sositheus was certainly 3rd century BC since he is counted amongst the tragic Pleiad (see TrGF1, CAT A, 5a, p. 54-55). The date range for performance is based on the evidence of the Suda which says that Sositheus flourished around 284/1 BC. Since Cleanthes was born in 331 BC, then the date range here assumes that he may have been criticised by Sositheus at any point from the age of 30.
