Production notes:
This was a group of ballets which is first recorded as interval entertainment during performances of Giacomo Rust's comic opera Il baron di terra asciutta at Teatro di San Samuele in Venice in 1776 (Sartori ID 3767). Performances took place in the carnival season of 1776 (between Christmas and Lent). The ancient plays on which they drew is not known, but likely to have been Sophocles or Seneca. Another ballet by Onorato Viganò, identically titled Oreste o sia La morte di Clitennestra and perhaps related, was performed in Rome at the Teatro di Torre Argentina in 1787 (Sartori IDs 17327 and 10037).
