Production notes:
We do not know when this play was produced. It is possible on metrical grounds to argue that the date of the play belongs to between 455-428 BC, see TrGF 5.2, p. 635. The date range for performance given here ranges from the date of Euripides' first competition (see Life of Euripides) to 428 BC. It is suggested by some that the Alcestis (438 BC) came after the Protesilaus (which would narrow down the date range for performance further), see TrGF 5.2, p. 635. The performance venue and location is not certain, but it is assumed here that this play would have been performed in Athens.
