Production notes:
Euripides wrote two plays with the title Hippolytus. They are distinguished as Hippolytus Kalyptomenus (veiled) and Hippolytus Stepanias (Garlanded). The Hippolytus Garlanded was produced in 428 BC and is extant. We know that the Hippolytus Veiled was produced before this other Hippolytus (see arg. Eur. Hipp), but we do not know when exactly. The date range for performance given here ranges from the date of Euripides' first competition (see Life of Euripides) to 429 BC. The performance venue and location is not certain, but it is assumed here that this play would have been performed in Athens.
