We do not know when this play was first produced. It is parodied in Aristophanes' Birds (l.279f, see TrGF4, p. 436-7) and therefore must have been performed before the production of that play in 414 Bc. The date range given here is therefore between Sophocles' first competition (Mar. Par) and 414 BC. It is assumed here that the play would have been performed in Athens.
