APGRD Notes
The play was to have been produced by John Houseman in 1935, under the original title 'By-word for Evil', with choral settings by composer Virgil Thomson and designs by Chick Austin, but the leading African American Broadway actor, Rose McClendon, who was to have played Medea, died, and the production was cancelled. The 1940 Atlanta production was therefore the first.
