APGRD Notes
Within the play, Lavinia reads the story of Philomela from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Lavinia is repeatedly compared to Philomela (2.3.42f., 2.4.26ff., 4.1.41ff., 5.2.194f). Aemilius compares Lucius' tale to Aeneas relating the fall of Troy to Dido (5.3.80ff). Titus' revenge could be inspired by Seneca's Thyestes. The earliest known record of Titus Andronicus is found in Philip Henslowe's diary, where it is recorded as a new performance by Sussex's Men on 24 January 1594.
