Notes:
Verse adaptation by Ludovic de Vauzelles, with sung choral odes. Composed in 1857-58, first published in 1860, Alceste was reprinted in Vauzelles's Oeuvres poétiques vol.2 (available online retrieved from on 16/04/2012). The preface to that edition mentions that the play and Vauzelles's other adaptation of Greek tragedy, Polyxène, were performed eight times in the early 1860s in a private venue, probably in Orléans where Vauzelles was a magistrate. The music for the choral odes was written by the author himself, and not, as was mistakenly reported at the time, by Mendelssohn. On these performances and their success see Vapereau, Gustave. L'Année littéraire et dramatique 5 (1863) p.249. Translation available online, http://books.google.com/books?id=uKpyXzHjZA0C&pg=PP1 (16/04/2012).
