The film premiered at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival (12-29 May); IMDB lists international release dates as: France, 8 September 1971; USA, 27 September 1971; UK, 19 January 1972; Italy, March 1972; Australia, 1 March 1973; West Germany, 15 November 1974 (TV premiere); Japan, 22 January 1977; Portugal, 24 May 1983 (TV premiere); and Greece, November 1995 (Thessaloniki International Film Festival). Van Steen writes that "after the Greek government banned Cacoyannis' Electra [ID 1066], The Trojan Women was produced in Spain in 1971, with an international cast of stars and with dialogue in English. The new movie was denied release in Greece as long as the colonels remained in charge" (2001, p.181).
