This is the first of the two ballets which were used as interval entertainments during the production of Piccinni's opera Alessandro nell'Indie. It is very likely that it drew at least on one of the relevant ancient tragedies. The second interval ballet for the same production, by the same authors, was titled La fedeltà premiata. The libretto describes Gallo as a professor of corno di caccia from Naples.
