This was the first of the ballets which were used as interval entertainments during the production of opera 'Antigono' by Michele Mortellari. It is likely that it drew on Euripides. The second interval ballet for the same production was titled La contadina fedele. The performances took place during the carnival season of 1778 (between Christmas and Lent).
