                      Considered the first English prose comedy, Gascoigne's play is an adaptation of Ariosto's Italian comedy I Suppositi (first performed in 1509, see ID 8059) which is modelled primarily on the comedies of Terence. Gascoigne's play was restaged at Merton College, Oxford in 1568 (see ID 8074).
