We do not know when this play was produced. The date range for performance given here ranges from the date of Euripides' first competition to the date of his last year competing in the Dionysia before leaving to go to Macedon (see Life of Euripides for both). On stylistic considerations it may be dated between 455-428 BC, see TrGF 5.1, p.372. The performance venue and location is not certain, but it is assumed here that this play would have been performed in Athens.
