We know that Sophocles wrote two plays by this title. We do not know when either of them was produced. One of them at least was produced before the production of Aristophanes' Clouds (423 BC) since it is referred to in that play at line 255 (see the scholion on this). The other play may have been a satyr drama. The dates given here range from Sophocles' first comeptition (Mar. Par.) done to the production of the Clouds (though of course the second Athamas could have been later). It is assumed here that the performance took place in Athens.
