Alcmene

Year:
between 406 and 367 BC
Genres:
Tragedy
Medium of performance:
Fully Staged Play
Languages:
Greek, Ancient (to 1453)
People involved:
(Dramatist)
Production notes:
We do not know when this play was performed. We know that Dionysius' last production was the Ransom of Hector which won the Lenaea in 367 BC, he died after this. The date range for performance offered here is based on the dates of Dionysius' rule in Sicily. The performance venue is not certain, but it is assumed here that these tragedies would have been produced in Athens (this seems in keeping with the self-consciousness of this tyrant writing tragedies and is supported by the evidence of Tzetz. Chil. 5, 178). This does not exclude the possibility that this play was also performed at Syracuse.
