Production notes:
Aristophanes 'Peace' (l.1009 f), offers possible evidence for a 'Medea' by Melanthius. The date of this play, if it existed, must have been before 'Peace' which was produced in 421 BC. We do not know when Melanthius first produced tragedies, but if this Melanthius is also the one referred to by Plutarch (Cimon.4.480C), then we know that he was active and writing, elegies at least, before 449 BC. For evidence on Melanthius see TrGF1, 23 Melanthius, p. 136-138.
